Illuminating Innovation: The Evolution of Red Light Therapy by Apira Science

For over two decades, Apira Science has been at the forefront of harnessing light to improve human health—most notably in the realm of hair restoration. The company’s pioneering work in Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) has positioned it as a global leader in non-invasive solutions to combat hair loss. From the early days of bulky laser helmets to today’s sleek and portable GroWell Cap, Apira’s journey reflects both scientific rigor and a deep commitment to user-friendly innovation.

A Scientific Foundation

Apira Science was founded with a singular mission: to improve lives through non-invasive, science-backed phototherapy. Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT), also known as red light therapy, is grounded in decades of medical research showing that specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light can stimulate cellular activity.

For hair regrowth, these light wavelengths have been shown to energize hair follicles, extend the growth phase of the hair cycle (anagen), and increase blood flow to the scalp, all of which contribute to fuller, healthier hair.

Apira’s early breakthroughs emerged from its collaboration with leading dermatologists and biomedical engineers. The science was sound, but the challenge was in developing a device that made LLLT accessible, comfortable, and effective for everyday users.

“Those early successes, especially with our Revage 670, which was widely used by medical practitioners, provided a glimpse of what could be,” said Frank DeMartin, CEO of Apira Science. “The scientific evidence made it clear that effectiveness was not an issue, but rather accessibility. Thus, our team went to work on developing a next-generation product that anybody could use in the comfort of their home.”

Enter the iGrow: Apira Science Redefines Home Use

In 2011, Apira launched the iGrow Laser Helmet, a groundbreaking product in the personal hair restoration industry. Designed for home use, iGrow offered a hands-free experience for hair regrowth, combining clinical-grade lasers and LEDs in a helmet-style device. What set the product apart from earlier LLLT tools was its comfort, automated functionality, and the incorporation of headphones for entertainment during treatment sessions – turning what could be a chore into a relaxing daily routine.

Clinical trials reinforced its effectiveness. In a 16-week double-blind study, ALL users of the iGrow experienced new hair growth – with some seeing as much as a 93%  increase in hair count. These results cemented Apira’s reputation as a legitimate player in the medical-grade hair restoration space. iGrow quickly earned global acclaim and became a benchmark for red light therapy efficacy and ease of use.

Going Beyond Hair Regrowth to Rejuvenate Skin

Apira Science’s next major step was in taking it’s groundbreaking red light therapy technology to an all-new avenue, which was for skin rejuvenation. While we all hope for the mythical Fountain of Youth, a more realistic option is using LLLT to provide a more youthful look.

With red and infrared LED lights, the wavelengths penetrate deep into the layers of the skin to stimulate cell growth and collagen production, producing positive results in as little as four weeks. Users see minimized fine lines and wrinkles, smaller crow’s feet, a reduction in redness or inflamed blemishes, improved skin texture and tone, lightened age spots, and reduced pore size.

Building on iGrow’s success and listening to customer feedback, Apira Science reimagined LLLT for a modern lifestyle. The result was the GroWell Hair Growth Cap, a lighter, more portable, and fashion-forward alternative to helmet-based systems.

The GroWell Cap uses 120 light diodes at 650nm – which scientific studies have shown is the optimal wavelength for follicle stimulation.

“You’ll often see our competitors touting higher wavelengths as being more effective – which simply is not the case, and science backs that up,” said DeMartin. “It’s about having the optimal number, not the highest number.”

With precision proprietary micro-lens technology, the cap ensures even light distribution across the scalp, which improves both comfort and results. Essentially, more scalp coverage means more hair regrowth, plus the GroWell discreet baseball cap design makes it perfect for users on the go, breaking down the barriers that previously kept LLLT confined to home settings.

“It’s not rigid and it doesn’t look ridiculous like all those helmets out there,” said Jonathan Graff, Director of Clinical Education at Apira Science. “It’s a nice looking cap, but even if you don’t like it, or if you just like variety, you can wear it your way … as the light array can easily be placed into most other hats.”

And, of course, the results speak for themselves. The new product uses the same proprietary technology that Apira developed for the iGrow product, which still results in a 100% effectiveness rate. The cap is FDA-cleared, rechargeable, and requires just 30 minutes of use every other day to be effective. It’s an ideal blend of convenience and clinically backed performance.
